Samuel Eto’o has recalled the day Inter Milan won the Champions League, revealing the interesting thing Jose Mourinho did ahead of the 2010 final.
The Cameroonian spent two years with the San Siro outfit following half a decade at Barcelona, and Mourinho thought highly of the forward.
The Portuguese handed him a great deal of responsibility ahead of Inter’s most important game of the season at the Bernabeu.
As the Nerazzurri prepared to take on Bayern Munich – a game they went on to win 2-0 – Mourinho addressed his players in the changing room in the usual way.
He then handed the microphone to Eto’o, for want of a better expression, and let the striker take over and motivate his teammates.
“Mourinho did something that few others would,” Eto’o told Sky Italia.
“He gave his team talk ahead of the game, then said: ‘Now Samuel will tell us how we’re going to win’. I have to thank him for that.
“I said that I had played many finals but that this was the most special. We had to do something for the people, for the Inter population who deserved it.
“I said: ‘Either we win the Champions League, or we die trying. We’ve got to die on that pitch to bring home the cup or we’ll die because we won’t return to Milan with the cup’. Fortunately, it all went well.”
According to Eto’o his powerful words brought tears to the eyes of Julio Cesar, and, of course, inspired the team to clinch the treble that season.
